Undoubtedly, eerie sounds from your beloved car are very hard to digest when you hear it for the first time. No worry. That happens. Every single driver must have experienced it before, in their driving history.


Sometimes you will not be able to identify, from where exactly the sound is coming from? The noise may vary depending upon the temperature, road conditions or any adverse situations. Unusual car sounds or noises warn you about the major breakdown of your car that will happen in recent future if you will not take the correct action accordingly.

So let’s figure out what are these sounds or noises and what measure you need to adopt to make them calm.

#1. Hissing noise under the hood:

If you hear any hissing noise coming under the hood, then know that

  • It’s most probably due to the vacuum leak. Vacuum leak generally refers to the vacuum line that might have got damaged.
  • Engine may be overheating.
  • Coolant or oil may be leaking towards a heated engine part like exhaust manifold.
  • This issue may turn your “Check Engine” light on.

What you should do:

  • It’s recommended that you should take your car to a qualified mechanic to resolve the issue.
  • If the cooling system is leaking, then try to seal it with a sealer such as Bars Leak or something like that.

#2. Grinding Noise When Braking:

  • Grinding noise suggests that your brakes could be completely worn.
  • Other reason for this problem may be with the wheel bearings.

  • As soon as possible after hearing the grinding noise, stop driving and tow your car to the nearest mechanic to perform a brake job.
  • Form the next time, don’t wait for a long period to replace your brake or else it will arrive to this extreme wear out position which is not safe at all.

#3. Squealing noise from wheels:

If you hear squealing or cyclic chirping sound coming from your car wheel, that may be due to the

  • Wheel bearing or axle bearing is out of order.
  • May be from a soft-metal wear indicator which rubs against the brake rotor to alert the driver to change the brake pad as brake pads wear out after a certain usage period.

What you should do:

  • Help yourself to get a qualified mechanic so that he will thoroughly inspect the problem and in case if needed, replace the brake pad with a new one.

#4. Clunking, Thumping, or Knocking Noises:

  • You can hear clunking noise when your braking system associated with loose brake calipers, faulty shock absorbers and loose suspension components.
  • Thumping noise refers to the increase and decrease in noise with the speed of the car. It’s most likely a tire problem (torn rubber in the tread or bubble in the sidewall) and if it continues, probably you will always feel vibration.
  • Knocking noise arises due to the wear out of inside the engine.

What you should do:

  • In case of clunking, if the universal joints are in a good condition, check the rear axle or the front drive unit for excessive wear out.
  • If you feel the thumping noise, get a mechanic immediately and inspect the tire as the torn rubber or bubble may blow out soon.
  • If you hear the knocking noise, it suggests that your rod bearings might have been worn out completely or become too loose, try to fix it immediately with the help of a mechanic.

#5. Squeaking noise under the hood:

  • The squeaking noise under the hood caused due to the slipping nature of the worn and damaged accessory belt as the belts loose traction when gets older day by day.
  • If the belt looks shiny or glazed, understand that the old belt needs to be replaced.

What you should do:

  • Go to an auto repairing shop and get it inspected by the mechanic and change it if necessary.

#6. Rattling noise:

  • If you hear a rattling noise when accelerating your car, possibility that your camshaft belt is slipping or not aligned properly.
  • May be due to engine overheat.
  • May be due to loose parts of your car like the exhaust system.
  • Low-octane fuel may be the cause.

What you should do:

  • Get an expert auto mechanic and fix it immediately.

#7.Ticking noise from the engine:

  • Ticking noise from the engine normally comes due to the sludge in the engine.
  • Due to the dirty or collapsed valve filters.
  • Stuck Engine valves may be the cause.

What you should do:

  • Adjust the engine valve.
  • Better consult with a certified mechanic.

#8.Popping sound from the engine:

Popping sound arises due to

  • Leaks in the fuel injector
  • Clogged air or fuel filters
  • Holes in the muffler

  • Worn spark plug

What you should do:

  • Your car needs immediate mechanic attention, so do accordingly.

You need not to be worry about every noises produced by your car because some noises are only the indicators of minor problems. So before it turns a major issue, you must respond to them with appropriate quick actions. Never pass them off thinking as only a minor problem.     At first, I was not conscious about any noise coming from my car engine but it was really foolish of me. Still I remember that horrible trip of my life, I was all alone at the road side for the whole night. Really horrible! Actually, I had noticed some sounds coming out of my car from 2-3days but I didn’t pay attention towards it hence the result.
